Tips on Using Herbs for Anxiety

During these trying times of economic uncertainty, many people are using herbs for anxiety remedies to help handle their stress in a healthy manner.  Since all modern medicines today had their start in natural herbal remedies, it is only natural to return to the “roots”.

For centuries, herbalists have studied and promoted the use of healthy, natural herbs to ease symptoms of many disorders and ailments; making this science the oldest known healthcare on earth.  Herbs are defined as plants that have medicinal, aromatic or savory properties, from which the leaves, stems, flowers, roots, and fruits are used in some form to treat health problems.

Using herbs for anxiety is becoming more and more commonplace in today’s society, largely due to its healthy and natural status, but also because herbs can be obtained just about anywhere, with no need for a prescription.  Before taking the first step to herbal remedies, though, it is important to have as much knowledge as possible about the herb you take.  For instance, if you are currently taking any type of prescription medicine, you must know if taking an herbal remedy will change the effect the medicine has on your body.  The best course of action is to discuss herbal remedies with your doctor before starting on an herbal regimen.

The next step is to know how to choose which herbs for anxiety are best for you.  Browsing the following list of herbs may help you to match the right herb for you:

** Passion flower is an herb that has a calming effect, and also helps insomnia and restlessness, also symptoms of anxiety.  This herb for anxiety is taken orally.

** Lavender, a natural relaxant, is an excellent herbal choice in the treatment of panic attacks associated with high anxiety.  This herb is used in aroma therapy as a calming scent.

** Lemon balm has the ability to reduce stress, help sleep patterns and generally promote relaxation.  Lemon balm is generally taken orally in capsule form or in teas.

** Valerian is a good alternative to prescription drugs normally recommended for anxiety.  Acting as a mild sedative, valerian promotes sleep and eases stress, all without fear of addiction.  It is available in pill form, oil form as a bath additive, and powdered form for use as a beverage.

** Kava Kava is an herb used for its relaxing qualities; however, it has been linked as a direct cause to liver damage and is therefore not recommended for use.  It has been even removed from many markets because of its ill effects.

It should be noted that before beginning any type of herbal remedies, it is strongly recommended that an individual consult with their physician, especially if other prescribed medications are already being taken.

There are many herbs for anxiety that can be taken that relieve feelings of stress, sleeplessness, restlessness and elevates mood.  They are natural remedies; precursors of modern day medicines that are still effective today.
